Carbon avoidance projects

Detailing the range of carbon-avoiding climate solutions we fund, and some examples of past projects supported 

In addition to the tree planting we fund, each month we choose two projects to purchase carbon credits from. We always aim to try and find new projects, allowing our customers to contribute to a wide range of carbon-reducing solutions. Detailed below are the carbon-reducing solutions we support:

 

Solar Projects β˜€οΈ

    The sun provides a virtually unlimited, clean, and free fuel at a price that never changes. Solar farms take advantage of that resource, with large-scale arrays of hundreds, thousands, or in some cases millions of photovoltaic (PV) panels.

    The significant increase in the solution use could avoid 44-119 gigatons of greenhouse gas emissions depending on the climate mitigation ambition and electrification of demand-side sectors.

    We have supported numerous Solar Projects, some of which are detailed below:

    Wind Projects 🌬️

    Onshore wind turbines generate electricity at a utility scale, comparable to power plants. They replace fossil fuels with emissions-free electricity.

    Today, 314,000 wind turbines supply nearly 4 per cent of global electricity, and it will soon be much more. In 2015, a record 63 gigawatts of wind power were installed around the world.

    Micro-hydro projects πŸ’§

    Small hydropower systems capture the energy of free-flowing water, without using a dam. They can replace dirty diesel generators with clean electricity generation.

    We have supported two Micro-hydro projects to date, with links to both below:

    Forest protection projects 🌳

    In their biomass and soil, forests are powerful carbon storehouses. Protection prevents emissions from deforestation, shields that carbon, and enables ongoing carbon sequestration.

    Here are some of the forest protection projects we have supported:

    Biomass power projects πŸ—‘οΈ

    Biomass feedstock can replace fossil fuels for generating heat and electricity. Waste greenhouse gases can also be tapped, captured, and used as a fairly clean energy source for generating electricity or heat, rather than leaking into the air or being dispersed as waste.

    Listed below are a variety of biomass power projects we’ve supported:

    Peatland restoration projects 🀲

    Peat is a thick, mucky substance made up of dead and decomposing plant matter. It develops over hundreds, even thousands of years, as wetland vegetation slowly decays beneath a living layer of flora and in the near absence of oxygen.

    Peatlands are second to only the oceans in the amount of carbon they store - an estimated 500 to 600 gigatons. Protecting them through land preservation and fire prevention is a prime opportunity to manage global greenhouse gases.

    Improved Clean Cookstove projects 🍲

    Improved clean cookstoves can address the pollution from burning wood or biomass in traditional stoves. Using various technologies, they reduce emissions and protect human health.

    Water distribution projects 🚰

    Project drawdown defines water distribution as reducing water leakage or oversupply of regional water, which reduces pumping and pressurization electricity and associated greenhouse gas emissions.

    Geothermal power projects πŸŒ‹

    The heat energy contained below the earth’s surface is about 100 billion times more than current world energy consumption. Geothermal power taps into underground reservoirs of steamy hot water, which can be piped to the surface to drive turbines that produce electricity.

    Currently, we have only supported one geothermal project, Geothermal power production in West Java, Indonesia

    Composting πŸ‚

    While many landfills have some form of methane management, it is far more effective to divert organic waste to composting.

    Rather than generating methane, the composting process converts organic matter into stable soil carbon, while retaining water and nutrients of the original waste matter. The result is carbon sequestration as well as the production of a valuable fertilizer.

    Electric Trains πŸš†

    Trains transport 28 billion passengers and more than 12 gigatons of freight annually. Most rely on diesel-burning engines; some tap into the electric grid.

    The number of electric trains is increasing. As electricity production shifts to renewables, rail has the potential to provide nearly emissions-free transport.

    Improving the Efficiency of Metro Transport, India is an example of an Electric Train project we have supported here at Ecologi.
