Emissions factor update - April 2024

The most recent emissions data for 2023 and 2024 is now live in Ecologi Zero

Overview

We're excited to share some important news that will enhance the accuracy of your emissions calculations and help you make even more informed decisions about your environmental impact. We have introduced the most up-to-date emissions factors for quantifying and reporting your 2023 and 2024 emissions.

What are Emissions Factors?

Emissions factors are critical components in the world of carbon accounting. They are numerical values that help us convert various activities, like energy usage, and emissions sources into precise carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e). These factors are essential for quantifying and reducing your carbon footprint.

Why the adjustment?

Methodology adjustments and calibrations are a natural part of a yearly carbon footprinting process. Emissions factors are updated on an ongoing basis to improve the accuracy of your carbon footprint assessment.

Why Updates Matter

We understand the significance of staying current in the ever-evolving landscape of environmental data. That's why we're thrilled to announce that we've updated our emissions factors to ensure they reflect the most up-to-date data available.

Benefits of Updated Emissions Factors

Here's why this update matters:

  1. Accuracy: With the latest emissions factors, your carbon calculations will better reflect the emissions that occur for the relevant time period. This means a more precise understanding of your carbon footprint.
  1. Transparency: We believe in transparency. That's why we want you to have access to the most current data available so you can trust the information you rely on.
  1. Better Decisions: Updated factors empower you to make better decisions regarding your environmental impact. Whether you're setting sustainability goals, reporting to stakeholders, or making operational changes, having the latest information is key.

How to Use Updated Emissions Factors

Using the updated emissions factors in our platform is easy. Simply log in and start your calculations as you normally would. Our system will automatically incorporate the latest data for the relevant year, ensuring that your emissions calculations are as precise as possible.

The updated emissions factors will influence the calculation relating to imported financial transactions from your Xero account, displayed within the “Suppliers and Transactions” page. The extent to which you see a change in your emissions estimate will depend on the nature of your spending, as some industries have seen greater changes than others. Some industries will see greater changes in emissions factors relative to the previous year than others. But importantly, all industries now have more accurate emissions factors for 2023 and 2024.

If you haven’t already, you can publish your 2023 report using the reporting function within the platform. This will screen for compliance to ensure that all relevant emissions sources have been captured and that you can confidently report your emissions.

If you have already published your 2023 emissions report, this is not a problem. Reports are created using the best available data at the time, so it is normal practice to only update the calculation for comparison purposes the following year. However, if you would like to update your report using the latest data you can. Visit the ‘Reports’ page, find your report and click “Update report”. The updated report will contain a footnote indicating the original date that the report was generated and the date of the most recent update. If you have created a public link for your report, this will automatically link to your updated report.

Am I likely to see more dataset updates in the future?

Carbon accounting is an emerging industry, and progress is constantly being made in the accuracy of data and data collection. Adjustments to the methodology and emissions factors will be made on an ongoing basis as the scope and accuracy of data are updated.

We're committed to providing you with the best tools and data to support your sustainability efforts, and these updated emissions factors are just one way we're delivering on that promise.
